Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)/ Dry Needling in Physiotherapy

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)/ Dry Needling is a specialized technique used in physiotherapy to relieve neuromusculoskeletal pain and dysfunction caused by tight/spasmed muscles and nerve irritation. Tight muscles can develop naughts (called trigger points) within the belly of the muscle that can interfere with their function, interrupt blood flow, and slow down recovery. IMS will help to release these trigger points and restore function, and range of motion, and improve the healing process by promoting blood flow.

How IMS Works

  • Targeted Treatment: IMS targets very specific areas of muscle tightness/ trigger points and nerve irritation, often deep from the surface and hard to treat by superficial massage techniques. This will relax the muscles, improve mobility, and restore function.
  • Muscle Relaxation: The fine needles used in IMS stimulate the muscle, causing it to relax and release tension, leading to improved blood flow and tissue healing.
  • Nerve Desensitization: By targeting irritated nerves, IMS helps to desensitize them, reducing pain signals sent to the brain and providing relief from acute & chronic pain conditions.

Benefits of IMS

  • Pain Relief: IMS can effectively alleviate musculoskeletal pain conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, sciatica and even neck-related headaches.
  • Improves Range of Motion: By releasing tight muscles and reducing nerve irritation, IMS can restore mobility and improve overall function.
  • Non-Invasive: IMS is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t involve medication, making it a safe and natural alternative for pain management.

Is IMS Right for You?

IMS may be recommended if you’re experiencing pain or restricted mobility in addition to conventional treatments like medication or physical therapy. Our experienced physiotherapists can assess your condition and determine if IMS is an appropriate option for you.

At Harmony Physiotherapy Coquitlam Clinic, our skilled physiotherapists specialize in IMS techniques to help our patients achieve lasting pain relief and improved function. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and take the first step towards a pain-free life.
